Yagna is the basis of creation of this universe.
In the Indian culture yagna hawan is the man component. It has been given a very high position in veda, Ramayana Mahabharat and historical books. Yagna purifies earth, water, air, energy, the atmosphere (sky) – the five elements of universe (Panchatatwa). Human body is also made of these five elements. Hence purification of these elements purifies human bodies. Atoms created as a result of yagna attract clouds which help in raining.

Importance of Yagna –
Yagna hawan is an essential part of Vedic religion and culture. Yagna was the primary way of manifestation of religion. In that age there were no idols nor were there temples. Human being used to directly interact with God. To express their gratitude towards God human beings started doing prayer and surrender himself before God. Slokas in Veda are nothing but expression of gratitude and surrender of human being t God. Yagna was performed as a manifestation of the art of gratitude and surrender. One altar was made in which fire is lit. Fire was supposed to be the mouth of all Gods and Goddess and by putting different things (mainly crops) in fire. We are feeding them.
Yajurveda is the main pillar o yagna. It has described all the ways of performing yagna and components needed for yagna and also different types of yagna which should be performed for different purpose. As veda is Apauraseya (not written by one person) eternal and permanent. Yagna is also apauresaya, eternals and permanent.
Yagna hawan is basically performed for the welfare of human being or society. For instance through yagna we pray to Indra and Vayu (air) that it should protect water and air from being polluted otherwise there will be infection, disease and human beings will suffer (Yajurveda).
Aranya ( Upanishad )
Oue sages realized the importance of yagna and performed it with great devotion. It has done wonder as to save environment and control pollution.
“A Bramhan Braahmno Brahmo Varchasi jayatama rashtre rajanya shwra ishabyoti byadhi maharatro jayatang dagdhri dhenur vodanang vananasu saptih Purandhiyorsha jishnu Rathestha sabheyo yuvasya yajmananesya viro jayalana nikame nikame noh parjanyo varshath phalabatyo na aushadhyoh pacchantang yogoksheno na kalpatam.
(shuklo Yajurveda 22/22)
Oh God, In our country we should have Brahmana performing yagna and worship God and do good work and excellent warriors and cows giving ample milk, healthy oxen who can carry load and fast running horses, women are expert, good behaved intelligent and scholarly clond pons ample rains. There are good crops and good medicinal plants, food grains and fruits are available n abundance. Welfare of society and individual should take place. Whatever is needed we should get and whatever we have achieved should we be able to protect.
Yagna hawan is performed not only in India but in other countries like Greece and Rome. Parsis and Vedic Sages perform yagna jains do Dhoop yagna. Yehudis perform yagna Christians and Muslims light Loban and incense sticks, Chinese term yagna as Ghom (Havan or hom). Yagna was performed by Egyptians and Red Indians of America. Yagna is the original religion of human beings. Scientists say that lighting of fire is a great discovery of human civilization. For the prevention of chicken pox, cholera Plague, flu Bhaisajya yagna is performed. The wood used in the yagna are palash, shami, pepal, bat, guler, mango and vilva. Fragrant articles are used in yagna like sandalwood, kastoori, kesar, agar, tagar, cardamom, jaiphal, jaustri, etc. nutritious articles are also used like ghee, fruit, rice, wheat, fruits, urad etc and also sugar, honey, dry fruits etc. The smoke produced in yagna is analysed by Prof Trylbert and said that the smoke purifies the air. This smoke has the power of disinfecting the germs of T.B, chicken pox, cholera etc. the smoke of Munakka, kishmish can kill the germs of typhoid, Sanitary Commissioner of Chennai Dr. King I.M.S said that the smoke of Ghee and rice mixed with kesar can kill germs of diseases. Dr. Haffkin of France is of the opinion that smoke of burning ghee kills germs of diseases.
Brahmaji created human beings in yagna
Geeta considers yagna and havan, as one of the daties of human, if human being do their duty Surya, Varuna, Vayu devta wl do their duties and thre wi be good rains.
Purana says that in the beginning Veda, Agni, Gou and Brahmana were created. They teach us to do our duties and do yagna to please Gods and Goddess. Geeta says:-

He said “yagna will help you develop yourself and help you to achieve the desired. “Yagna will promote your Gods and Goddess and God and Goddess will promote you and do your welfare. If you consume leftover of yagna you will be free from all sins . All human being is dependent on anna, (crops) rains help grow crops an yagna causes rains. God rests in yagna he who does not do their duty according to the cycle of life suffers and lives a futile life.”
Hence yagna is performed from the beginning of civilization. Yagna helps in the individual welfare and total welfare of the society. He has created sunshine, moonshine, rains, vegetation. This nourishes our life. Earth gives us water to drink, crops to nourish our body, fire to protect us from winter, air to breath and sky. He only controls the life cycle of living beings. To keep God satisfied in order to get blessings and comparision of God we have to perform yagnas. The ritual of yagna is given in detail in Veda.
That is why cow is very important. Gou (cow) gives “Havidurdha”. Th ghee from cow milk is the clearest “Havi” of God and cow prepares the land for performing yagna and cow progeny oxen helps in agriculture and grows wheat, rice, jou, til etc. needed for yagna. Yagna land is purified with cowdung and gomutra (cow urine). Cowdung is used for lighting the yagna fire. Before starting yagna “Panchagabya” is needed Panchgabya is made of cow milk, curd, cow milk ghee, cow urine, cow dung, payasanu is made of and rice and sugar is the paramanna (best food stuff) Ghee is the best food “Ayurve Ghreetam”. Food without ghee is considered unholy.

Before the spread of Christianity people used to perform havan Doven used today is named after havan only.
Research says that eon in the atmosphere affects human health then eon causes headache and apathy to wrk. Eon in the atmosphere increases in a good season. Ioniser is fixed in every office and is found that as a result efficiency level increases and improves human health. Yagna improves the atmosphere in this way and improves the quality of life.

Yagna in Geeta :- There is a mention yagna in Geeta several times and the performance of yagna is highly praised. The term yagna in Geeta depicts any act which we do with greater sincerity and as a offering to God. our whole life is yagna and we should perform our duties without expecting any result.
In older days there was no communication system. There were no vehicles. Movement was extremely tiresome and labour some. That is why Vajpaya yagna was held in religious places and in specific dates.
Arrangement of kumbhmela in Ujjain, Nasik, Prayag and Haridwar was done for this reason. All religious gurus, acharyyas used to assemble in one place and perform religious activities. Devotes also gathered in one place and take directives from their respective gurus and also know other gurus and great sages. It was actually done to clarify certain religions and social issues and reform superstitious activities.
Yagna hawan was performed to strengthen the religion and royalty. This is known as Vajpeya and Rajsuya yagna.
Agnihotra or yagna is prevalent in India in different forms. Lighting a lamp and incense stick before God is a part of our worship. Holy fire is also a pions fire and we observe the occasion with great devotion. It is prevalent in other religions also.
The person who performs yagna attains swarga (paramdham) Atharvaveda 6/123/3
Yagna helps us to attain a healthy and long life and a celestial realization. Our sages through yagna could realize “praramvidya” (science of life)
Our Indian culture can be called a yagna culture. From birth upto death there are 16 sanskaras which elevates our nature from animal too God. In every sanskara and in every auspicious work yagna is indispensable. Holi is an annual yagna. Marriage is solemnized before agnidevta and after death our cremation is done by putting the body in a pyre. That is purnahuti or the ultimate ahuti. This shows how important yagna is for the human life. It is a process of reformation and self development which occurs as and when these sanskaras take place. It starts from when the body is in mother’s womb. Punshawan sanskara takes place. Body’s brain starts developing in this stage when the body is in fifty month. Our sixteen sanskaras are garvadhan, punshawan, shimantonnayan, jatakarma, namkarana, nishkramana, annaprasan, chudakarm, karnaved or vidyarambhs, yaggopobit, vedarambh, keshanta, shamabartan, vivah, antyesthi and shraddha. Every sanskar, is important and it has deep significance. Every sanskar takes us forward towards the right direction. Upanayana sanskar takes place at the age of 8-13 years. This is a sensitive point of life. This sanskara has deep rooted meaning and helps this tender mind to take the right path. Brahmacharyya ashram teaches a young boy as to what we should eat, what we should hear, what we should read, how we should sit, when we should get up, Gandhiji used to say brahmacharyya is the discipline of our senses, we can only do it when all our senses are in total control. It gives a new life to a person.
Brahmachari performs yagna and prays that give me buddhi (intelligence) power to analyse (vichar shakti) and power to control all my senses.
In the upanayana sanskara medhashukta is recited. It is a prayer to God to help him to develop his intelligence and power of concentration so that he grows up and becomes a person of great ability. In the three strings of yagnopobit signifies karma, bhakti and gyan .If a person achieves these three he is a person of great ability . Our life should be a combination of the above three .Every person has a tremendous possibility .Om scriptures are directives based on practical realizations of sages . If properly comprehended can help us to lead us towards light .
Yagna enlightens the self (2/14 shukla yajurveda) The fire of yagna makes the person, wise successful , famous and a great orator and gives him a son with all merits (5/25/5 Rigveda)
Shankar mishra writes that veshaja yagna cures disease. Prajapati is God of Gods. When he created human being, their joints were loose. The year is prajapati, the union of day and night, new moon full moon, different season are the joints with the help of yagna human being is able to stablise the problem which occurs in the time of change.
Best time for yagna is the period of change when season changes. This is a time when diseases spread and yagna purifies the atmosphere and helps us attain good health.
Raja Dasharath performed Putreshti yagna. Charu (khir) was made and queens of Dasharatha were asked to consume it. Firstly priest knew that there are two queens, so it was divided in to two equal parts but when he came to know about the third queen. He took some part from each one’s share and gave it to third queen. Youngest queen Sumitra got two shares. She gave birth to two sons. This is special about charn which is a powerful medicine. It looked like a simple kheer but with the blessings it became extremely powerful medicine.
A respectable and prosperous person should perform yagna. The person who is miser and does not perform yagna is not considered to be a respectable.
In vedic age big Go-yagnas were performed. Bhagwan Krishna also performed Go- yagna during govardhan puja .
Holi is an annual yagna . This is performed for the improvement of the crops.
‘Huten shamyate papam’( Mahabharata shanti parv 191/2)
Havan diminishes the sin, samveda says when we perform yagna and recite the mantra again and again which has a great impact. This has been adopted by Buddism and Jainism in the form of chanting.
Sacrifices of animals have been vehe mently criticized in all the scriptturns. Sage charvake though believed in different way of living. He was materialistic but he was against sacrifice of animals. “ If you are attaining heaven by sacrificing animals. Sacrifice your father he used to say, Padmapuran, Mahabharata, Veda are against animal sacrifice. Bhisma pitamaha says the person who sacrifices animals go to narak (hell).
Shrimad Bhagavat has gone one step ahead. ‘Hey king the animals whom you have sacrificed will take revenge and will attack you.’

‘It is good to perform yagnas like Maharudra, Atirudra, Lakhshahom, and Vishnuyag. The yagna with animal sacrifice is prohibited’.
The karmakanda which doesnot elevate us spiritually is of no meaning. Vedic shrot yagnas were originally performed for spiritual elevation. But with time yagnas lost its sanctity and was done for selfish reasons and included animal sacrifice etc. cow and horses also were started to be sacrificed.
Sompan has a special significance in spiritual practices. Originally it was taken only as a symbol.
Som – Vedic sages used to drink somras and attained a stage of intoxcation. In Veda there are prayers to praise Somdev. Som is God of energy and intoxication. Preparation of somras is also a yagna. The instruments used for this preparation is also worshipped.

Yagna mantra has a power to prevent any disease. The person who performs is protected and a disease does not attack him. Whatever offering we do in yagna have effect, it disappears but have impact in the atmosphere and destroys the germs of disease. It is tested by sages and experienced. It is extensively mentioned in Yajur Veda. The havan samagri becomes ashes and spreads in the atmosphere and kills germs. In Atharva Veda says that as river stream carries a way all the dirty things in the river, in the same way the havi (offering) put in the yagna carries away germs of disease. It carries away germs of T.B also. It is mentioned in Chanak rhsamhita French physicist Dr. Trile has done research on the impact “Fire and Fume”. He has found in his research that some ashes of some articles are beneficial. Sugar produces Pharmic Aldihide gas after it is burnt. It prevents cholera, T.B., epidemic, small pox. Gas produced by dry fruits like kishmish, chuhara, mannukka kills germs in the atmosphere more than when we burn a sugarcane. Offering of fume of ghee, guggal, kapur etc. in the havan is good inhalation for lungs French scientist Prof. Tilbert says that sugarcane fume is very powerful. It kills the germs of choer, T.B and pox etc.
Dr. kundaulal Agnihotri resident of barielly has written in his book “I have treated T.B patients by yagna. There were patients who were in a very advanced stage and their cavities were very deep. Doctor had kept them in sanatarium and had no hope for them. Dr. Agnihotri’s yagna therapy has cure them and they are living a normal life. Vasa and Guggal’s fume is very good for T.B. patients. Aparajita’s medicinal fume is very good, in the same way neem, nagarmotha and vach is also purifies the blood and nourishes. The sadhak who regularly performs yagna with goggal, long, ghee, sugar, sandalwood paste remains healthy, powerful, energetic person which are all elements of agni Chemical analysis shows that the use of jaiphal, javitri, chandan, agar, nagarmotha helps in the development of immunity in a person.
Yagna even helps an eccentric person to get rid of his problem. Agnihotra University in California and Solisberg (Switzerland) has done research. Agnihotra temple is there in Virginia where special havans are done. Medicine are prepared from the ashes and special food is prepared for patients. This type of application is done in Chili, Poland and West Germany. In these experiments woods and medicinal plants are used. Research scholars say that havan has great impact not only it does benefit to individuals, it also claims that in the area where yagna is performed there is a fall in the criminal rate also. There is less mental stress and jealousy. Senator Robert of California and Berry Rathner American Psychologist have done research in this subject.
Agnihotra Sansthan in Rendel Town of America is run by Lady Lyndka. This place is famous for this type of treatment and they also carry out research regularly.
The ashes of havan is used for curing patients and it is as good as valuable medicines. Famous scientists Dr. Berthold Jaihal have done research on ashes of havan and found that it is extremely useful for curing patients. He is producing ointments, Agnihotra eye drop, Agnihotra Shalaka, Agnihotra cream etc. These ashes nourishes a plant also if applied to them.
Dr. Haffkin of France has proved on the scientific level that fire can produce subtle particles. He says that when we put ghee in fire it’s impact spreads miles and miles. The fume of ghee, rice and kesar kills germs in the air and after rains it goes in the earth and makes the land fertile. Even agriculture can be benefitted from yagna or havan.

In ancient times people used to perform yagna on their own. They used to think it as thir uties and yagna also used to fulfill their wishes. They produced enough crops and trees plants, fruits and flowers were enough to fulfill every one’s need .
The water in the area where yagna is performed is very good to drink. Even crops grown in this area is very nutritious in nature. The person who consumes this anna is not only healthy is very intelligent also and lives a long life.
Another Agnihotra University is established in Washington city of America. It was started by Sai Paranjpe. This university claims to increase crops with the help oof yagna. Americans are now totally against chemical insecticide and they are preferring this treatment. This is known as farming therapy and it is being extremely popular. There is a remedy for every problem of farming in this institute.
Regular yagna in farms purifies the atmosphere. It enhances the growth of plants and also improves production. The taste of crops in this way is also better performance of yagna maintains the moisture of the land. Paranjpe says that if we treat on crops with affection and respect no disease will be there and production will be better.
Yagna shesh is amrita (Padmapuranshrishkhand 15/312)
The ashes of yagna works as a manure and insecticide and recitation of mantra works as a tonic for the crops.
The scientists of Germany in their experiment found that energy generated from yagna has great power and is extremely simple universal and cheap way. Performance of yagna has always helped physical and mental diseases of human being successfully in ancient time. With the advent of modernization and development of medical science we have forgotten these very effective and holy methods. In these days we experience so many psychological problems. Life has become extremely complicated. Yagna can really help the human race to cope up with all these problems.
Evaporation of medicine is very effective. It has impact on total atmosphere. The evaporated medicine can be inhaled easily and helps us directly. Scientists say that with each inhalation we are taking oxygen and taking out carbohydrate by exhaling. It purifies our blood. Effect of inhalation is fast and more effective.
Ayurveda is a very effective medical science which is being practised from the vedic ages. There is description of medicinal plants in Rigveda (67) in Yajurveda (81) Ayurveda (700) Atharvaveda (290) Shidhha Paddhati (600) Unani (700) Charak has given description of 431 varieties of medicinal plants and Sushruta has described 395 varieties.
With the advent of modern medical science research on Ayurveda has decreased. Due to deforestation availability of medicinal plants have also diminished. But there is a need to revive this science and more research should be done to publicize it and develop it. From time immemorial there is a close relationship between trees and plants and living being. Trees and plants are nourishing the mankind and all living being. Let us revive this natural system of God.
Plants and vegetation accumulates all the power of sunrays, water, salt and all the natural components of nature. This power helps fight infectious diseases. Trees not only stops soil erosion it gives us shade, convert desert into fertile land, provide wood for furniture and house buildings, provide fuel and helps fight pollution.
It also helps fight diseases like, fever, dropsy, cholera, pallor, headache, asthma, leprosy, itching, T.B, diarrhoea, vomiting.
Botanical life consists of following alchemies.
Dulacious (2) Acid (3) Salt (4) bitter (5) acrid (6) astringent.
Science of Ayurveda is been developed on these alchemies. Ancient Ayurveda is not less than a Upaveda. It is totally a natural way of treatment. Ayurveda says that as on universe is made of panchatatra, human body is also made of panchatatwa. Imbalance of any tatwa creates disease. Imbalance is created by our style of living, our eating habits, and no exercise, Extreme climate also imbalances our system.

There are three types of anna – krita, krita krita and akrita. Boiled rice in krita, rice is kritakrita and money is akrita. The crop which has been cooked is purified, hence boiled rice is krita. Crop which is partially improved like rice is kritakrita, the thing which is not done anything is akrita. These are three types of havidravya (offering to havan)
The yagna with medicinal plants is known as Bhesaj yagna. These are tulasi sharpagandha, brahmi, shankhpushpi, shatabari, jatamasi, ashta warga etc. some special wood used in havan has special effects like chandan, devdaru, Agar, Tagar etc. Aam shami, gular, pipal, ashoka, vilwa, chitrak are also used. Rice, Jou, til, chana, gehu (Rice, Barley, sesam seeds, grams, wheat) sugar, jaggery, honey, dry fruits, are also used in yagna. Yagna performd with these articles spreads fumes full of medicinal value. It is inhaled by those who are present and enters the body. It takes out the undesirable elements present in the body. It is like preventive vaccinator. It increases the immunity of a person. Yagna fume purifies the atmosphere of the house and kills the germs in our house. Holi parva is crop yagna. We put energy in the crop before navanna (new crop)
Havan samagri does not include salted things because salt (sodium chloride) produces chlorine gas. This gas is harmful for human beings.
French Scientists Dr. Trilword and Indian Physicist Dr. Satya Prakash (Swamiji) has proved by their experiment that Pharmaldihide gas is produced by the gas of wood has the power of killing germs of disease. That is why in our culture dead body is burnt. The dead body produces many poisonous germs and only agnisanskara kills this germs.

In havan specific wood is used for specific purpose. For worship of Sun wood of aak, for Mon wood of palash, for Mangal khair, for Budh apamarg, for Guru piapal, for Shukra gular, for Shani, shami, for Rahu durba and Ketu kusha. It is according to planet whom we are worshipping.
The wood for havan should be collected from dried branches of aam (mango), piapal, gular, chonkar, bel, dhak, chandan, devdaru Scented wood should be less used. Vayu According to puran dhak, kakpriya, bat, pilkhan, pipal, wikkant, gular, bel, chandan, pitadaru, shal, khair is ideal for havan.
Brahman and Gou both are children of Brahma. That is why in ancient scripture “gou” is addressed as “Brahma Sutabhyascha”. “Gou” word is synonimt, as of gomata and also mother earth. Gou provides us articles for havan. Both cow and mother earth gives us havan samagri. Cow gives us milk and mother earth gives us crops. Both of them are havi. From anna we prepare article for havan. Like this from milk we prepare curd, ghee etc. which are used is havi. Brahman recites the mantra and Gou give us all that we want to offer. There are two things that we achieve from performance of yagna :
Progress & prosperity
Moksh or renunciation
“Yatoabhudayang nishreyassidhi sa dharmah”
Like this we achieve everything that a person should achieve in his life time. Yagna performed under piapal tree never goe in vain. Performance of yagna under bel tree brings to Lakshmi and Saraswati and God of knowledge. All God are fond of Belpatra. Hence havan in yagna is done with belpatra and wood of bel is used for havan. If we worship under a Bel tree God is pleased and we attain the our goal. Worship under a dhak, rasuri, shami briksha with the wood of the above named trees frees us from suryapida. Suryapida gives diseases like insanity, fever, stomach problem, fits, eye problem and also accident. Those problems can be tackled by performing yagna.
Performing havan under a khirni tree with the wood of khirni, mango and shami end chandrapida. Chandrapida creates mental tension and problem of insomnia, insanity and heart problem and sexual problem etc. Havan controls the toxicity in a human body and helps person become healthy.
Nagdamani: – It is very effective medicine. If consumed with milk Nagdamani fruit purifies blood and improves intellect. No snakes come under Nagdamani tree. It helps in the planetary problems also. People who are suffering from mangal should take roots of Nagdamani Performing yagna with mango, dhak, shami, cures arthiritis, blood pressure, paralysis, cancer, sweing in body etc. It pacifies mangal pida.
